Calculating the GI of Mixed Meals and the Diet

The GI of a mixed meal or diet can be predicted when the GI values and carbohydrate content of foods in the meal are known. The prediction is best when meals are not high in fat, as high fat content tends to reduce the impact of carbohydrate foods on blood glucose levels.

To calculate the GI of a mixed meal:

  1. Determine the percentage of total carbohydrate in the meal contributed by each food.
  2. Multiply the known GI of each food by this percentage.
  3. Add the resulting figures to get the predicted GI of the meal.
Example:
Food
Carbohydrate (g)
% Total
