Program Eligibility

High, medium and low GI foods may carry the symbol. To be eligible for acceptance into the program, foods must:

  • Contain at least 10 grams of carbohydrate per serve (serve size as stated on the nutrition information panel).

  • Have had their GI determined by an accredited laboratory such as SUGiRS (Sydney University Glycemic Index Research Service). Approved laboratories use the standardised procedure and have had their data quality verified by Glycemic Index Limited.

  • Have a nutritional composition that meets the required nutrient criteria for the appropriate food category.

The nutrient criteria aim to include foods that are not high sources of fat, particularly saturated fat, that are low to moderate in sodium and a source of fibre (where appropriate). It is important that the GI value is not regarded as the sole determinant of food choice - just as kilojoule value or fat content should not be.
